The MA/MSc Psychology for Fashion Professionals headed by Dr Carolyn Mair and taking place at the University of the Arts London, became the first course of its kind in the world when it began in 2014. Fast forward 2 years later and 16 students have gone on to become the first people in the world to become certified Fashion Psychologists. Out of those 16 students was me - Shakaila Forbes-Bell, the only Black person on the course graduating with a distinction with a thesis detailing the economic effects of multicultural fashion marketing on Black and Ethnic Minority consumers (publication pending). Impassioned by the historic nature of the day and of the achievement of my fellow scholars I made the Instagram post below.
A post which over the course of the of the next few weeks would go viral. With over 17,000 likes, shares and re-tweets on various different platforms, my post appeared in various publications including The Voice, Black Matters US, Gal-Dem and many more. I am humbled by the recognition and even more thankful that I have been given the opportunity to introduce the world to a subject that is not only dear to my heart but is also cutting edge and a vital contribution to the Zeitgeist of our moment.
